What a Locksmith Costs in Milwaukee (2026)
Updated 2026-10 · Milwaukee, WI

Where these numbers come from
Nobody publishes a survey of Milwaukee locksmith prices. The ranges below are what local companies generally quote, checked against national figures from Thumbtack, which put the typical car locksmith job between about $117 and $259, with simple daytime work lower and night work higher. They are a sanity check for the quote you get, not a price list. We do not set prices and take no share of them.
Car work
Lockout with the key inside
Roughly $75 to $150 in daylight. The job is short; most of what you pay for is the drive and the hour. After midnight, on a holiday or on the kind of January night when every company has a queue, expect the top of that range or above it.
New transponder key
Often $150 to $300 from a mobile locksmith, cut and programmed at the car. Adding a key to a car that still has one working key is at the lower end. Originating a key with every key gone, which needs the lock decoded or a code pulled, is at the upper end.
Push-to-start fob
Often $200 to $450, and more for some European and luxury makes, where the fob itself is expensive and part of the programming may need the dealer.
Ignition
Often $150 to $400 for a cylinder repair or replacement, more if the column is damaged or new keys are part of it.
House work
Home or apartment lockout
Roughly $75 to $175. A standard deadbolt sits at the low end; a high-security lock, a failed lock or a smart lock with no backup sits at the high end.
Rekeying
A service call of about $50 to $100, plus roughly $15 to $35 a cylinder. Four outside doors done in one visit cost far less per lock than one done on its own.
New locks
The hardware plus labour. A decent residential deadbolt is not the expensive part; altering an old door to take one can be.
The five things that move the price
- The car: year, make and model decide whether a key can be programmed at the curb and what the fob costs.
- Whether any working key exists: adding a key is cheaper than starting from none.
- The clock: overnight, weekend, holiday and severe-weather calls carry a premium.
- Distance: a company coming from across the county charges for the drive.
- Destruction: a lock that has to be drilled adds a new lock or cylinder to the bill.
What a quote should include
The service call or trip charge, the labour, any parts or key blanks, and programming as a separate line for car keys. Ask for the total on the phone. A company that will only say "it starts at $29" is telling you the number is going to change.
Want a number for your own car or door? Call with the year, make and model, or the kind of lock, and the address. You will get a total to compare.

Where to go next
Common questions
Why is a car key so much more than a house key?
Because a modern car key carries a chip or is a radio fob, and it has to be programmed to the car. The cut blade is the cheap part.
Is an after-hours call always more expensive?
Usually. Most companies charge more overnight and on holidays. If the car is safe where it is and you can get home, a morning call may cost less.
Should I get two quotes?
For a planned job like rekeying, yes. For a lockout in the cold, one honest total price you can accept is worth more than a second call.
