Locked Out of Your Car in a Milwaukee Winter: The First Ten Minutes
Updated 2026-10 · Milwaukee, WI

Minute one: who is inside the car
If anyone is shut inside who cannot get out, a baby in a car seat, an elderly passenger, a dog, call 911 now. Do not wait for a locksmith. Wisconsin's law protecting people who force entry into a car to help someone, Wis. Stat. 895.484, expects 911 to be called before anyone breaks in, and responders treat a child in a cold car as an emergency.
Minutes two to five: get warm, then make the call
Milwaukee's normal January overnight low at Mitchell Airport is about 17°F, and the wind off the lake makes the East Side and the North Shore feel colder. Standing beside the car is the wrong place to wait. Go into the gas station, the shop, a neighbour's porch or a friend's car, and call from there.
- Is the engine running? Check the tail pipe is clear of snow, and note the fuel.
- Is the key visible inside, or lost?
- Year, make and model, and whether it is push-to-start.
- The exact location, and where you will be waiting.
Minutes five to ten: the parking clock
Milwaukee bars parking on most city streets from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. without an overnight permit, and from December 1 to March 1 adds alternate-side parking on most residential streets: even-numbered sides on even dates, odd on odd. During a declared snow emergency, alternate-side rules run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., fines run from about $50 to $150, and cars can be towed.
A car you cannot get into is still subject to all of that. If the lockout is late in the evening, tell the company, and check the city's posted rules for your block. Towed cars go to the city tow lot on West Lincoln Avenue, where you need a valid licence and proof of insurance to get the car back.
What not to do
- Do not pour hot water on a frozen lock or door. It refreezes, sometimes worse.
- Do not force a door that is frozen shut rather than locked; the weatherstrip tears.
- Do not accept a phone quote under about $50 for a lockout without asking what it leaves out.
- Do not break a window unless someone inside is in danger and 911 has been called.
Frozen, not locked
In a Milwaukee winter, a lot of "lockouts" are doors frozen shut after a thaw and a hard freeze. If the fob clicks the locks but the door will not open, try every door, including the hatch, and push firmly on the door before pulling to crack the ice. If the lock cylinder itself is frozen and the key will not go in, a little de-icer made for locks is the right tool, not a lighter.
Locked out in the cold? Call from somewhere warm with the year, make and model and the location. You will get a total price before anyone sets off.

Common questions
Should I leave the engine running while I wait?
If the car is locked with the engine running, you have no choice. Make sure the tail pipe is clear of snow so exhaust cannot build up around the car.
Does roadside assistance cover lockouts in winter?
Many plans do, all year. The catch on the coldest nights is the queue. Ask for an estimated arrival and compare it with a local locksmith.
My car is about to be in a no-parking window. What can I do?
Tell the locksmith company, and check whether your block is actually restricted that night. Posted signs override the general rules.
