Key Fob Not Detected: What to Check Before You Pay for a New One

Start with the battery

The most common reason a push-to-start car stops seeing its fob is the coin cell inside the fob. Milwaukee cold makes a weak battery weaker, so a fob that was fine in October fails on the first single-digit morning. The battery is usually a CR2032 or similar, costs a few dollars, and the owner's manual shows how to open the fob.

Use the backup start position

Most push-to-start cars have a backup: hold the fob against the start button, or put it in a marked spot in the console or the steering column. The car reads the chip directly at close range even with a dead battery. Your manual names the spot. If the car starts that way, the fob is fine and needs a battery.

Getting into the car with a dead fob

Most fobs have a mechanical blade hidden inside. It slides out with a release button and opens the driver's door. On some cars the keyhole is behind a small cover on the handle. The alarm may sound until the car is started; that is normal.

When it is not the fob

  • The car battery is weak: dash lights dim and the starter clicks or is silent.
  • Strong radio interference: try moving the car or the fob away from chargers and other devices.
  • Another fob in the car: two fobs can confuse some systems.
  • The fob was dropped or got wet: a new battery may not save it.

When you do need a new fob

If a fresh battery and the backup start position both fail, the fob is damaged or has lost its programming. That is a replacement, and the dealer or locksmith guide explains which route suits your car. Ask for the dead fob to be erased from the car if there is any chance it was stolen rather than broken.

Tried the battery and the backup spot and still nothing? Call with the year, make and model for a price on a new fob, programmed at the car where your make allows it.

Common questions

Can a cold snap kill a fob battery?

Cold reduces a coin cell's output, and a battery near the end of its life often fails on the first very cold morning. A replacement is cheap.

Will changing the battery erase the programming?

On most fobs, no. Swap it quickly and follow the manual.

Can I drive with the fob not detected?

If the car started using the backup spot, it will usually keep running. Fix the battery before you switch it off somewhere you cannot get help.
